Joomla Workshop on 15/09/2008
(a workshop cum website development contest)
Joomla is an award winning CMS (Content Management System) used to develop a website and more importantly an open source tool that helps in easy and efficient way of building a website.
The event included a workshop on joomla followed by a contest on website development. The workshop was held on 15th September,2008 in BVBCET,Hubli. The event was a grand success with the participation of students of all semesters and all the branches of various Engineering colleges such as SDMCET Dharwar, KLESCET Belgaum, REC Hulkoti, KLEIT Hubli, GIT Belgaum, Maratha Mandal College Belgaum, SKSVMACET Laxmeshwar, PC Jabin College Hubli, JT College Gadag, Chetan Science College Hubli, Oxford College Hubli, IMSR Hubli, BEC Bagalkot, Engineering College Haveri and BVBCET Hubli.
The workshop was held in two sessions:
1st Session: 15th September, 2008 (9:00am - 1.00pm)
The workshop was held for the students of other Engineering colleges with the participation of 45 teams where in each team consisted of 2 members resulting in a total of 90 members. The workshop started with a talk on open source by the faculty coordinator Mr.Shankar Setty and followed by the learning of CMS open source tool called Joomla, taught by following resource persons Mr. Vijaykumar, Mr. Praveenkumar, Mr. Shailesh S G (7th Sem ISE Students).
Each team was allotted a system to have a hands-on experience with the tool. The students started with the installation of wamp server followed by the installation of joomla. There after the students were taught the basic terminology, difference between static and dynamic websites, HTML vs CMS etc. Students along with the Resource persons developed a simple website covering the basic functionalities which included adding content to the website, learning about the modules, menus, changing templates, managing the administrator tools etc. It was followed by a learning of additional features such as adding new plug-ins or modules, managing various groups of user accounts etc.
2nd Session: 15th September, 2008 (3:00pm - 7:00 pm)
The workshop was held for the students of BVBCET, Hubli with the participation of 100 teams resulting in a total of 200 members. The teams were divided into to 3 batches with each team being facilitated with the system. The workshop for the 3 batches was held simultaneously in 3 separate labs by resource persons Mr. Vijaykumar, Mr. Praveenkumar, Mr. Shailesh S G (7th Sem ISE Students).
A massive strength of around 300 students attended the workshop with a big hit.
The workshop ended with the problem statement being displayed on the www.bvbsfw.org for submission for the contest.
Summary of the feedback:
Students felt it is important to know about the open source. Usage of CMS has become easy and effective way to develop a website without having to code. Students felt that, without this open source tool joomla! “Designing a website would have never been this easy”. Participants wish to have many more events of this kind in every college.
Scope for improvement:
Students wish to have the workshop on learning joomla!(open source tool) to be held for 2 days which would give them more exposure to the tool.
