The much awaited Tech Speak by Mr.Abhas Abhinav, CEO, DeepRoot Linux began amidst a fairly large pool of audience. It was our immense pleasure of having him here as a resource person to enlighten us on Free & Open Source Software (FOSS) business. It was an interactive session wherein we were made to think from the perspective of a software producer, software consumer & finally balance between the two, which is the spirit of FOSS business.

He started off by making students aware of the ethics of a Free Software Business. He stressed upon the idea of not only thinking as a developer but also as a consumer to setup a successful business. He explained Free Software Business (FSB) as a business, whose business functions are built around and to cater to Free Software and whose primary purpose is to author / support / service Free Software.
He rightly said that: -

“If every organization in the country has to use software for some or the other purpose,it should be a Free and Opensource software because the purchase amount that has to
be paid by the institution will be huge for the proprietary software“.

Finally he left an advice for organizers and students to use linux and more of such other Open source software.

In the week long festival of software freedom week’09 held in BVBCET, a talent hunt event by the name “EXPRESSION” was held on 25/09/09.

The event centered a theme – ‘Open source’, based on which the participants had to prepare a cultural event which could be in the form of a skit, mime, drama, dance, music etc. to name a few, in a very creative and innovative way.

Both were experts in the field of art & culture and are also associated with the Kannada film industry. They also have their own cultural training academy in Hubli and Dharwad by the name “ATMA ACADEMY”.

The event aimed at bringing out the creative talent about open source amongst the students and showcase the theme in a very creative way. There were enthusiastic contestants from various disciplines and it was carried out in a well organized and the success was appreciated by many.

NIRVANA-A Cultural Extravaganza

The real open source promotion among masses happened in the cultural evening cum FOSS Rock show where open source project slides rolled on amidst rocking performance from the BVBCET Rock Band followed by sizzling dances and vocal melody from our very own BVBians entertaining and creating FOSS awareness amongst thousands of people. Thanks to the whole BVB Rock Band for the rock show.
