Reachout
Reach-out is an initiative of BVBCET as a part of Software Freedom Week ’09. The objective of this awareness camp was basically to make students look beyond windows, and to make them aware of alternatives. In our pursuit to create awareness, volunteers visited various colleges offering under graduate courses and educated them about Open Source via a presentation and an interactive session.
The Reach out team had done a brief survey and pointed out the common masses of the society who extensively use soft wares but have less/ no knowledge of piracy. They found that the common masses comprising of student groups are heavily using soft wares but hardly have the knowledge of piracy and penalty.
Team reachout was comprised of following people: Hardik Satiya, Niket Honalli, Apeksha Hudedgaddi, Pooja Kanoor, Prakash Peerashetti, Harish Joshi, Pallavi Gurjal, Puneeth Harlapur, Deepak Awari, Apoorva Sohani, Kshitip Gadaginmath, Sangeeta , Lohit, Kiran Kunnur.

Oxford College, HubliOur presentation covered the technical aspects of Open Source such as the definition, History, criterion defining Open Source, and examples of open softwares. We also made them aware of various reasons as to why they have to switch to Open Source, along with the video of Software Freedom Week. Towards the end of the session we had a demo wherein we highlighted the user-friendliness of Open Source Software. (Ubuntu)
This awareness camp has been a fountain of knowledge not only to the target audience but also to us volunteers. This programme has achieved its objective of creating awareness and popularizing Open Source.
