It is said that “One picture is worth more than Ten Thousand words”.This statement signifies the importance of an image to man. Man has become increasingly dependent on images, their editing and processing whether it is for a simple passport photograph or in fields like Astronomy, Remote sensing, Computer vision or Medical image processing.
For all these applications we need the help of Image processing tools and soft wares. GIMP is one such open source tool, well equipped with such image editing and processing capabilities. This workshop aims at promoting such a tool by giving an idea of its features and its applications.
What is GIMP?
GIMP is an acronym for “GNU Image Manipulation Program”. It is a freely distributed program (open source) for tasks such as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.
GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.
Workshop
With the aim of promoting open source, ‘Software Freedom Week-09’ is offering a seminar and workshop on GIMP for students interested in Image processing and editing, animation. The workshop aims at teaching how to use GIMP tool for
