Software Freedom Week 2008 , Reach out Team visited about 5 organizations in and around Hubli Dharwad and created FOSS awareness. They took FOSS beyond the SFW Venue.

Glimpse:

Introduction:
A workshop was conducted in H.D.M.C. regarding spreading awareness for FOSS (free and open source softwares) for the event reach out during the software freedom week ’08.
The workshop started with introduction from Shilpa Vaidya, who gave the brief idea behind FOSS and need for using them.
This was followed by a technical session.

Technical session:
Technical session was handled by Anand Sortur and Asha.B.N.
It covered the different FOSS and how they could be used in day to day life and also advantages of “open office” over “ms office”.

Conclusion:
A concluding talk was done by karan Kothari who emphasized again on use of FOSS.
p.s.: CD’s and brochures were distribute to initiate the use of open source softwares.

     

Reach Out: Chetan College

1) Chetan Science College

Duration: 3 30 to 4 45 pm.
Dignities Present: The principal, Chetan College,
Staff of PU College,
Staff of Chetan School.
Attendees of Seminar: Approx 200 students of PUC1 and school.
GLIMPSE OF SEMINAR:
Reason: To spread awareness regarding OPEN SOURCE softwares under the event SOFTWARE FREEDOM WEEK08 organized in BVBCET, Hubli.
Introduction: A brief and interactive introduction was given by Mr. Nikhil Goudar which included the motive of our workshop and few very good examples to give an impact for the cause i.e. awareness of Free & Open Source Softwares
Introduction was followed by the technical session.
Technical Session: Technical Session was about giving a brief idea about available FOSS and their use in day-to-day work.
Technical session was divided into two parts: 1-To explain about Open-Office.org which is most commonly used by the students, and 2-To explain about other useful,powerful and efficient Open Source softwares.
These 2 parts of the technical session was dealt by Mr. Vikas Kantu and Mr. Kiran Naidu.
It was very interactive and knowledgeful as well.
Conclusion: Technical session was ended with a conclusion talk from Mr. Shrinivas Habib who again emphasised on use of Open Source softwares and finally with a thanks giving speech from Miss. Pravita Tolannavar.
Response: The response was great from the students which depicted from the feedback forms(enclosed) and also from the principal who insisted upon taking another session in their campus.
Resources Supplied: The cds containing lots of Open Source softwares and brochures briefing about these softwares were provided to students as an initiative to start with FOSS-Free & Open Source Softwares.

     

WORDSTAR REPORT

An event to improve the verbal capabilities of the students (Fun Event).A list of 150 high frequency words with their meanings was given before hand.A burst of registrations was encountered with the peak reaching 95 members.An overwhelming response was also shown by colleges from Belgaum,Chikodi,Dharwad,Hulkoti etc.More enthusiasm was shown by first year students.The event was successfully conducted on 19/09/08.

Software Freedom Week is back!!

And this time we are again back!!! with a bang. The Software Freedom Week 08 will be celebrated from 14th Sept 2008 t0 20th Sept 2008. Team BVBCET(www.bvb.edu) takes immense pleasure to Host this mega open source promo event in this part of Karnataka.

Software Freedom Day (softwarefreedomday.org ), which is globally declared on 20th Sept 2008, will be celebrated as a Software Freedom Week in BVBCET. The event aims at

1) Promotion of the spirit of OpenSource.

2) Provide a competitive platform for the students of this part of Karnataka so that they can explore and exhibit their technical caliber and update their knowledge of the present contemporary technologies.

We are back!

After having a joy ride like experience with SFW07, the team behind the success of it has grown multifold and so has our motivation and objective to promote the spirit of OpenSource.The World celebrates it as        “SOFTWARE FREEDOM DAY”………. We improvise and make it a point to engage ourselves in the act of making people aware about OpenSource over an entire week and so the name - “SOFTWARE FREEDOM WEEK”.
